Internet Stream of DOOM!

There is great coverage on hurricane Frances at theWFOR Homepage. You must use IE to view the stream, but it is miles ahead of CNN. In fact, CNN is poaching this coverage to fill their news needs.

Do you remember when natural disasters were experienced first-hand, or days later in the paper? As cool as it is to bathe in the 24/7 coverage, I have no idea how this affects my view of the event. Will I read others' accounts later and gain some insight? Or will I treat it like I was an eye-witness due to my proximity to information?

Anyone else looking forward to this game? And if so, which platform are you going with?

Is Honshui InThe Forest Banging A Drum?

Our esteemed contributor, and constructive critic, Honshui, seems to have gone missing. Methinks he may be preparing for the Men's Retreat in Cymric Saskatchewan. I have no doubt he will mold those lost souls into the kind of men they should aspire to be.

God bless you Honshui.

Signals from Space?

LONDON (Reuters) - An unexplained radio signal from deep space could
-- just might be -- contact from an alien civilisation, New Scientist
magazine has reported.
The signal, coming from a point between the Pisces and Aries
constellations, has been picked up three times by a telescope in
Puerto Rico.
New Scientist said on Thursday the signal could be generated by a
previously unknown astronomical phenomenon or even be a by-product
from the telescope itself.
But the mystery beam has excited astronomers across the world.
"If they can see it four, five or six times it really begins to get
exciting," Jocelyn Bell Burnell of the University of Bath told the
magazine.
It was broadcast on the main frequency at which the universe's most
common element, hydrogen, absorbs and emits energy, and which
astronomers say is the most likely means by which aliens would
advertise their presence.
The potentially extraterrestrial signals were picked up through the
SETI@home project, which uses programmes running as screensavers on
millions of personal computers worldwide to sift through the huge
amount of data picked up by the telescope

NASCAR 2005: Chase For The Cup Review

It seems that EA's Nascar game may once again be made virtually unplayable due a crippling frame rate problem. How does this disappointing garbage get released?
Rent this game first gentle reader. I bought last year's Thunder 2004 without trying it first. Big mistake. One cannot play a racing game that runs at a stuttering 8 frames per second. Read more here...

U.S. Open Fashion Tidbits

Good grief, has the John Newcombe line of tennis clothing come back in style? Who in the hell wears orange on the tennis court? Outside of Knoxville that is.

IGN weighs in on NHL 2K5. I don't know. The arenas were all virtually identical in last years game and the sluggish skating engine made the rink seem more like a tar pit. Sounds like a rental to me. Read more...

The Poor are Pessimists - Arnold Says So!

This Economist articles shows that 1.3m more people do not have health care in the U.S. As well, poverty rates are on the rise. I guess there are more "economic girlie-men" for Arnold and the cream-filled Republicans to despise. Just how does "fuck-off faggot" become a cherished term for the Republicans? Oh wait, I see. Nevermind.

Some U.S. Open Tidbits

Amazing stat - Wayne Ferreira has now competed in 56 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. No GS wins in his career, but he has been steady. More a star in doubles, but a better- than-journeyman career to be sure. By the way, Stefan Edberg is number 2, with 54 consecutive appearances. I am so lazy.

In the "feel good" category is Vince Spadea. Ranked as low as 256, Spadea is the 22nd seed at the U.S. Open. And he hits an open stance backhand. Two handed. That just doesn't seem efficient. Or possible.

Blinded by Celebrity

Watching Arnold speak at the RNC reminds me so much of the Nuremberg rallies show in Triumph of the Will. I am not saying that Schwarzenegger is a Nazi (though his father was a Nazi collaborator and had a membership card to the party). No, I am speaking to people blinded by a massive ego telling them how great their country is, how great things are, and how evil are those who stand against them. There was no substance to a speech filled with lies and lines from his movies. Yes, he said "girlie man" again. And the audience was left in near hysteria.

Oh goody, the Bush twins are on stage.

Lobster Bash Memories

I got unabashedly funky (in my ugly way) this morning while listening to "Staying Alive" on the CBC. This seminal disco hit was on the 50 Tracks show hosted by Jian Ghomeshi.

Then, images of Bill Windover in tight polyester pants came rushing into my head. Followed by the nightmare image of Godfrey throwing up on Janine Baxter.

Good times, good times.

Thank god they played The Clash (finally). It was like a palate-cleansing cracker for my tortured musical tongue.

Dick Armey speaks for economists

According to Dick Armey, former House Leader of the House of Representatives in the U.S., all economists hate the minimum wage.

I admit that I thought economists were not likely to agree on much of anything. Not because they are economists, but because they have brains.

Unlike Dick.

Private Social Security in the US

This from Salon.com | Four more years?:

"Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, co-chairman of Citizens for a Sound Economy

To succeed in November, President Bush must both mobilize his base and engage nontraditional voters by putting a big, bold idea on the table. That is what Ronald Reagan did in 1980 with income tax cuts, and it is what Republicans did in 1994 with the Contract With America, when we won a majority in the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. Both were historic victories won by campaigning on big, bold ideas that attracted millions of new voters to the process.

It's time for the next wave of bold ideas. There is a big idea out there that will energize the base and bring new voters to the polls in November: reforming Social Security by creating personal retirement accounts, which would allow workers to invest a large portion of their Social Security tax dollars into individual accounts that they own and control. This idea is popular because it frees future generations from relying on the whim of congressional promises for their retirement, and it solves the looming Social Security unfunded liability crisis. It's also a way to let Americans at all income levels begin to build real wealth -- and personal accounts are especially popular with younger voters."

I have to say that I think "own and control" is wonk-speak for "funnel money into funds controlled by my Republican buddies."

Welcome to wimbledonthemovie.com

Whilst I do so love a good tennis movie, can Wimbledon, the movie, ever hope to top the classic Players? How can you beat a film wherein Vilas gets to the Wimbledon finals and utters the great line - "Wimbledon, is, Wimbledon." I especially loved the part where Pancho Segura hits balls to the late Dean Paul Martin in the pouring rain. Like Pancho ever played tennis in the rain.
