The Rev - Talkin' 'Bout My Generation

Out behind The Woodshed, the Rev has a long piece about where Canada is going and who is holding the reins. In response to a post at The Galloping Beaver about Canada reverting to its parochial ways, Kev has this to say:

"Social mobility and education are at an all time high, racism and xenophobia at a historic low, despite the best efforts of Global and FOX news and the SUN newspapers to keep us parochial and provincial, Canadians like to play in the big sandbox and we like to invite others in to play in our sandbox. The last two censuses have shown that just over half the population of Toronto were born outside Canada. That was probably true in your parents day too, but now most of those people aren't from the British Isles any more. Can you imagine the impact that has for diversifying our national culture? Toronto is now one of the most international cities in the world, with Vancouver - once a hive of British expatriate remittance men - a close second and a thriving center of Asian-Western cultural crossover. The stuffy old reactionaries and the young fogies decry this, but most people my age and younger celebrate it or accept it as established fact. The day of the WASP ruling class is over."

Pop in and give it a read. And stay for the other posts, as the Rev has been on a tear of late. Especially if you are curious about Japan, its corporate shoguns, or their pickle-up-the-ass treatment of gaijins.

We're No. ! Sort Of!

I finally found a Google search that puts the Jim Dandy Goodness blog in the top spot. Best of all, it doesn't rely on obscure terms unique to this blog, just my regular, sunny disposition. What a good day.

Clck and laugh.

Thursday Economics Blogging

Ludwig von Mises,(1881-1973):

Liberalism and capitalism address themselves to the cool, well-balanced mind. They proceed by strict logic, eliminating any appeal to the emotions. Socialism, on the contrary, works on the emotions, tries to violate logical considerations by rousing a sense of personal interest and to stifle the voice of reason by awakening primitive instincts.

You aren't going to find gems like this on Youtube. Nosirree.

It Is Time To Thank The U.S.A.

Jon Swift, the most reasonable conservative around, has written a soon-to-be Thanksgiving classic. Mr. Swift lays out, in clear and sober language, how thankful we should be that the U.S. isn't paying any attention to us.

This Year, Let's Celebrate Thankstaking:

The United States is the only country in the world that celebrates Thanksgiving (unless you count Canada, which I don't). Since the days of the pilgrims Americans have been giving thanks, but isn't it about time we got some thanks for all that we have done for the world? Just once I would like to celebrate Thankstaking instead of Thanksgiving. Just once I would like the rest of the world to show us a little gratitude.

Traditionally the Pilgrims started Thanksgiving in 1621 to thank the Wampanoag Indians Wampanoag for helping them through a difficult winter. For the last 400 years we've been thanking the Indians for what they did for the colonists, so would it kill them to take one year to thank us for civilizing them and for introducing them to casino gambling, which has proven to be such a boon to their culture? Regrettably, the Wampanoag can't thank us because most of them were killed off by the colonists and those who claim to be their descendents can't prove they who they are so they aren't officially recognized. But there are plenty of other Native-Americans who could certainly take an hour or two off from running the blackjack tables to say, "Miigwetch, kimosabe."

Too Much For Just One Man

What? He had a chimpanzee too? The man was blessed by riches beyond my ken.

Potty Training!

As a matter of fact, this is exactly what happens in our house. Poopy time is so much simpler when we are in tiger/bear/lion form. And Japanese. I can only guess this must be a true reflection of what the Rev goes through as well. But I bet he has more action lines and they probably fly through the air. With ninjas. And robots. And maybe an atomic dinosaur. Japan is so cool.
