Sonny and KD, You've Been Put On Notice

You guys are part of what is destroying our society, G.W. Squire says so:

"The effect on students of the possible college teachers' strike is only a part of what is deeply flawed in our society.
The problem is simply the public sector's increasing sense of entitlement, as they look down from a position of privilege. The lack of restraint by this large group continues.
As the private sector faces layoffs and salary cuts, action must be taken to face down this injustice. Otherwise, oppressive debt for, and increasing demoralization of, the next generation is in the cards.

Then who will be left to support the public troughers?
The first step seems clear: Forbid strikes in the public service.

G. W. Squire

London"

Bang on Squire. All except for the fact that there isn't a strike, and probably won't be one. And the fact that over 2/3 of the Fanshawe teachers voted to not strike. So as to not, you know, demoralize or oppress the next generation. They showed...um...restraint.

Other than that he is right. KD and Sonny are elitist bastards.

Oh God No! A Shoe!

Fuckers! How can they print a picture of a shoe? I don't want my news to be poignant; I don't want horrific stories to horrify me. Hint at things, soft-sell me, but don't make me feel!

Julie Varley. Home town idiot.

Dance Your Cares Away, Worries For Another Day

I've been watching a lot of Fraggle Rock lately. Jeez Louise but little people can be fixated. Anyway, something I have finally noticed (after hours of trying to block out the sounds and pictures), is the quality of the music. Unlike The Muppet Show, all the music is original. And freed from the need to only provide laughs, the songs are varied, often poignant, and full of that musicality stuff. I think.

As embedding isn't allowed, you'll have to follow the links to hear the songs, but I think they're worth a listen, at least to soften your opinion of a really sweet show.

I love the use of the clarinet and klesmer-like sound in the Fraggle version of a funeral dirge, "Dixie Wailin".

The episode "Capture the Moon" features several great songs; the two-part "Shine on Us Now" and the lullaby "Sail Away".

Fans of Jim Henson will know that his appearances on the show were limited, but golden. His portrayal of Cantus is Henson at his best--troubadour, mentor, leader, poet. "Let Me Be Your Song" is excellent.

Have you been wondering if Fraggle can harmonize? Wonder no longer.

Now, don't you feel just a little bit better about the world? No? Then listen to "The Friendship Song" and see if you stay cynical.

The Healing Power of Sport

And just like that, years of governmental neglect and entrenched racism are washed clean. Washed clean by the cleansing purity of clean young men washed clean by the baptism of sport. And a crucible. Something probably burned too.

New Orleans; post-hurricane the same way the U.S. is post-racial.
