Sean has been trying for years to like sports. You see, he just wants to connect to other humans in a way that doesn't make the other person stare at him in disbelief.

I think his problem is that he is trying to consume North American sports. What he needs to do is ease in with sports that come from countries for which he has special affection. Like, say, Japan. Like, say, Japanese baseball. It's an easy crossover and may help him connect with other, non-dice throwing people if cornered and in need of conversational fodder.
